Obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue that is caused by overeating and a lack of self-control. The World Health Organization (WHO) now recognizes obesity as a chronic progressive disease resulting from multiple environmental and genetic factors. An individual is considered morbidly obese and is a candidate for surgery if he or she has a body mass index (BMI) of 35-40, and experiencing morbid obesity-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis or 40 or more BMI.

BMI is a measure used to define overweight, obesity and morbid obesity and reflects the amount of excess body fat an adult has.

Dr. Matthew Fabian, Mason City Clinic’s bariatric surgeon, otherwise known as a weight loss surgeon, now provides a variety of bariatric and weight loss surgeries for patients to help people lose weight and restore their health and quality of life.

Bariatric & Weight Loss Surgeries

The Lap-Band®

Dr. Fabian is an expert in Lap-Band surgery and will be glad to provide consultation regarding the procedure. If you have had a Lap-Band in the past, Dr. Fabian and his team can work with you to optimize the Lap-Band through counseling, adjustments or surgery if needed.

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a weight loss surgery in which the stomach is divided into two sections. One is a small upper pouch, which is connected to the small intestine so that during a small meal, food bypasses the stomach and causes a full, satisfied feeling. The second is the bypassed part of the stomach, which is left intact and may be used in the future if needed.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature, leaving a tube-like or “sleeve” shape. This weight loss surgery permanently reduces the size of the stomach, although there could be some dilation of the stomach later on in life. The procedure is performed laparoscopically and is not reversible. This surgery may be combined with the duodenal switch procedure that restricts absorption of calories and fat.

Dr. Fabian can provide consultation to those patients who have had bariatric surgery in the past and are not satisfied or are having symptoms.
